Location

so many great places to visit

Our location, in the heart of Pickering's conservation area has been instrumental in helping customers choose ’17’ as the place to stay. Whether you are visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - just a short stroll down the hill, Heartbeat Country on the North Yorkshire Moors or the coast at Whitby or Scarborough, Pickering is a perfect base. Equally we are a 20 minute drive from the Yorkshire Wolds - the inspiration for David Hockney, just 25 minutes from Castle Howard and 40 minutes from York. Bempton Cliffs, Flamborough Head, Bridlington and Filey are only a little further and you can be at The Deep in Hull in less than an hour.

Pickering the Market Town at the centre of where to stay

Pickering is a perfect base from which to discover and enjoy the delights of  this peaceful yet diverse corner of North Yorkshire.  From 17 you can see the roof of the  North Yorkshire Moors Railway, whilst at the top of Burgate is Pickering Castle which overlooks the town and at the bottom of Willowgate is the church of St Peter and Paul with its medieval wall paintings, and of course the town centre which has over 100 independent shops.  For walkers and cyclists it may be Dalby Forest, the North Yorkshire Moors or the Coast which stretches from the Humber to the Tees. The seaside towns of Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and Whitby and traditional cliff hugging villages like Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes. There are iconic historic houses such as Castle Howard, formal gardens, ancient roman sites and Abbeys such as Rievaulx and Byland. Eden Camp, Flamingoland and GoApe are all within 10 minutes drive.  The walled city of York offers a variety of museums, a new Art Gallery and fabulous range of shops.   We are only a 20 minute drive from the Yorkshire Wolds, the inspiration for the David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy, and a further 30 minutes will take you to Hull.
During the day we have a huge range of cafes and tea rooms from which to choose.  The Black Swan in Pickering is run by Phil and Gill, who brew there own beer and offer diners additional choice. Willowgate Bistro in Pickering is new and getting rave reviews. It is small with a short menu but always good, not fine dining but a great addition to the town. We enjoy Spice4U in Pickering but it can be very busy and noisy. The Sun in Pickering is an excellent pub for a good ale and a slice of Pickering company. They also do live music in their garden on a regular basis. The Bay Horse in Pickering is in new hands and the pub/restaurant food is a good addition to the food offer in town.
Check in from 4.30pm daily, or at other times by arrangement. It would be appreciated if you could let us know if you are arriving after 6.30 p.m. Guests arriving early can park in our car park at the rear of Burgate on Willowgate.

Departure – Guests are requested to vacate their rooms by 10.15 a.m. on day of departure.  Luggage can be stored by arrangement.

A real treat to start your day cooked to order on the Aga.  All our breakfast ingredients are produced and sourced locally and fully provenanced from our kippers smoked at the bottom of Burgate at Taylors to our butchers award winning pork sausages and Side Oven muesli. Choose from carefully prepared  fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, and an extensive cooked to order selection which sometimes includes additional dishes such as home made pancakes with smoked streaky bacon and maple syrup.  Since 2007 we have held a Breakfast Award from the A.A. for the quality, choice and service we offer.  If you have friends staying locally or perhaps in the our cottage they can join you for breakfast with a little notice.  Additional breakfasts can be provided at £8.50 for a “light” breakfast and £12.50 for the Full Selection.
