17 Burgate is a truly exceptional, intimate guesthouse in the heart of Pickering, an ideal base from which to explore the east and south of the national park. This imposing Georgian town house has been extensively refurbished by owners Pat and William Oxley, retaining period features – wonderful ceiling mouldings, multicoloured glass window overlooking the stairs – but with flair and taste, being comfortable and stylish rather than arch or effortfully hip. On a chilly evening, the wonderfully snug, flagstoned bar, with its wood-burning stove and comfy sofas, is the ideal place to browse the maps and walking guides, and plan your next day’s adventure. Breakfast is a showcase of local talent: kippers and salmon smoked nearby, free-range eggs laid nearby, mushrooms grown nearby, bacon and sausages from the butcher in Malton. Oh, and the marmalade is home made. Every effort is made to nurture environmental responsibility. Opened in 2003, it was a boutique B&B before the term really took hold, and still offers one of the best options in the region.
Great article about the area-think Paul enjoyed his B and B http://t.co/fDGUsArdYO
Overall numbers have held up well this year although there has been last minute booking. We have seen a very high level of foreign visitors-particularly from USA and Australia. Our returners numbers are up even further as are our referrals-especially those from overseas. We have noticed less shopping sprees to York and more caution of where to eat dinner. Our volume of champagne, chocolates and flowers has also decreased again. People still want to come and stay away but are managing other spend more carefully it seems. Great feedback on Pickering as a base for the wider region and the improved food offer in the town now (Willowgate Bistro and Bay Horse take a bow plus 2nd Rossette at White Swan).Lots of dissatisfaction with Whitby this year-too busy, too many drunks, very run down- but better feedback on Scarborough.
We are busy at the moment but still have chunks of availability for the last 2 weeks of August into September. Keep an eye on websites for deals and offers-Trip Advisor, Welcome to Yorkshire and Late Rooms.
Ryedale Show is on Tuesday 30th and is a very good one day event. Livestock, horse classes, machinery, food and drink and many many trade and commercial stalls. great day out for the family
We have just played hosts to a family birthday party for the weekend. They had a fantastic time and we were able to add on some interesting ideas. Vintage bus back from Whitby, specially chosen wines, dinner on Friday night, a never ending night time cheese board , letting a baby stay and many other little changes to our norm.
Something for you all to think about for your next little get together
The annual celebration of all things Yorkshire is fast approaching-10th -12th July. It is a wonderful day out and only an hours drive away-we are happy to suggest places to stop and eat on the way back(but you will probably be stuffed with show food and nibbles!!)
We become increasingly aware of what a great base for a visit Pickering is as our guests seem to do more and more things from here. yes Scarborough,Whitby,York, Castle Howard, the Moors are still favourites but so many others as well. Bridligton, Bempton Cliffs and Flamborourgh Head, Burton Agnes and Sledmere and walking the Wolds in one direction. The Cleveland Way , Staithes ,Runswick Bay,Saltburn in the other are all growing in popularity. Many guests now go to Hovingham market and it seems the local Shows are also becoming more of a reason to be in the area. We are happy to advise, guide and help plan your visit
