Why choose Pickering?

February 18, 2016

Pickering is best known as the home of the North Yorks Moors Railway with steam trains running across the moors to Whitby. But there is so much more to this lovely Market Town and the surrounding area. A Norman Castle which English Heritage regularly feature on their literature, the finest example of medieval wall paintings in the country in the parish church and the fascinating Beck Isle museum. There are over 100 independent shops and ,as I write, no empty retail premises. This does not include the Flea Market or Antiques Centre both well worth a visit. The Kirk Theatre hosts all sorts of shows and has a growing programme driven by a committed group of volunteers. The town has a thriving cultural scene with visiting shows at the Memorial Hall ,a Jazz Festival and many arts and craft exhibitions. We are also the local centre for live music with performance most nights of the week in one of the town’s pubs.As you would expect in a vibrant community there is a plethora of community groups and visitors are always welcome-bridge,bell ringing, yoga, zumba and much more. There is also the fabulous development of off road cycling tracks at Newbridge Park-another voluntary community project.
Pickering is also the perfect base for a wider North Yorkshire visit with the North Yorks Moors National park only 10 minutes drive away and easy access to Ryedale’s other market towns-Helmsley, Malton and Norton, Kirkbymoorside.
We are also only a 30 minute drive from Whitby, York and Scarborough.
See you soon
